The government’s proposal on CO2 capture and storage is important in terms of regulation and establishing a clear framework for the future capture, transport, and storage of CO2. However, the consortium behind CO2Vision believes that this does not provide a sufficient foundation for realizing the North Jutland business flagship project.

In its proposal, the government plans to move CO2 capture, transport, and storage into the next phase of development through regulation and investment. Specifically, the government proposes combining two funding pools for capture and storage, thereby creating two major competitive bidding processes to accelerate CO2 capture and storage. By introducing the country’s first framework law on the piped transport of CO2, and by standardizing the conditions for (private) investments in CO2 storage in offshore and onshore formations.

For CO2Vision, the business beacon of North Jutland, where companies, researchers, educational institutions, and business development organizations have been working for nearly two years on the next green wave—CO2 capture, transport, utilization, and storage—an important milestone has been reached regarding the future work on CO2Vision in North Jutland.

“Government initiatives are necessary to realize the potential in this area for the sake of the climate and economic development. It is encouraging that the framework for infrastructure, as well as carbon capture and storage, is being strengthened,” says Mogens Christen Gade, chair of the steering committee behind the CO2Vision consortium.

If the proposal is adopted by the Danish Parliament, it will provide the industry and the energy sector with a better framework for investments in CO2 capture and storage. This market is expected to be driven by the larger companies in the field. Therefore, the consortium behind CO2Vision looks forward to new proposals that include support for the further development of new technologies and capture facilities, as well as support and frameworks that take the entire value chain in this field into account.

“To achieve our climate goals, we need to think beyond simply capturing and storing CO2. There is no doubt that, initially, it is the larger companies that are driving this development, and a supportive framework and funding for capture, storage, and transport are essential to this effort. The next step must be to focus on the utilization of CO2 and continued funding for test sites, guidance, and training. If we start now to consider testing technologies, training the workforce of the future, developing employees’ skills, and providing guidance to small and medium-sized enterprises, Denmark will be in a stronger position to achieve its goals of reducing its climate footprint and creating growth and jobs,” says Mogens Christen Gade.

What is CO2Vision?

CO2Vision aims to make North Jutland an international pioneer region for CO2 capture, transport, utilization, and storage by 2030. CO2Vision consists of various projects and initiatives focused on research and demonstration sites, educational programs, and analyses, with the goal of making North Jutland an international pioneer region for the green industries of the future.

CO2Vision has been designated by the Danish Parliament as a strategically important initiative for 2021–2027 regarding CO2 capture, utilization, transport, and storage. To ensure long-term collaboration and commitment to development in this area, the consortium behind CO2Vision has entered into a partnership agreement with the government and a number of business development organizations.
