The Gate2GreenFuels project will further develop the CCU-Hub Aalborg test and demonstration platform at the Port of Aalborg, which will eventually encompass the entire value chain for the use of CO2 in the production of sustainable fuels (including methanol as a base component).

Through testing and demonstration activities at and around the Gate2GreenFuels test and demonstration site at the Port of Aalborg, the project aims to lay the groundwork for decision-making analysis tools and roadmaps for CCU technologies.

Alongside testing and demonstrations, the possibilities for testing technologies such as these in the context of local and regional conditions and infrastructure are being explored. In this way, the project examines the changes and the cohesion within local communities, as well as how these technologies benefit the stakeholders involved.

Gate2GreenFuels will be designated a Living Lab, which will support industries seeking to demonstrate and test existing and new technologies, while also serving as a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the future.

A range of technologies ensures physical-level demonstration and scenario development, thereby creating a foundation for effectively optimizing and selecting technologies on a large scale based on both environmental and local perspectives.

The following technologies are being tested:

– Digital Twin – demonstration of resource flows within the system

– Rollout of large-scale methanol production

– Demonstration and testing of a methanol synthesis plant (power2met system)

– Demonstration and testing of a hydrogen plant

– Integration of the energy system and integration of CCU/PtX technologies

– Preparation for CO2 storage and integration into PtX facilities

Effect

After 2026, with the implementation of the activities in this project, the following is expected:

– A significant contribution to the project development and the decision to proceed with FID for European Energy’s e-Methanol plant at the Port of Aalborg, which will result in substantial capital investments in renewable energy and methanol production in Aalborg and North Jutland.

– Increased testing and development related to the methanol demonstration plant at the test facility.

– Ongoing presentations, demonstrations, and commissioning, as well as the establishment of methanol infrastructure.

– a testing platform that can support employee skill development in collaboration with knowledge and educational institutions.

In addition, the following potential impacts of the project are noted:

– Attracting international companies and investments.

– A well-developed ecosystem for CO2 capture and utilization, both locally and internationally.

– Attracting public and private financial leverage and investments.

– Development of a business ecosystem where companies can test systems and, in the long term, establish themselves in Aalborg.
