Maritime transport will be a key component of the CCS infrastructure of the future. Denmark is well on its way to becoming a European hub for CO₂ storage, where specially built ships serve as the floating link between industry and the subsurface.
To ensure a high level of operational reliability, it is crucial that local maritime service companies have the right expertise to service these ships.
CO₂ Shipping in Practice
Ørsted Kalundborg and Northern Lights
Starting in 2026, Ørsted will capture up to 430,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually from the Asnæs and Avedøre power plants. The CO₂ is transported to Kalundborg and loaded onto ships such as the Northern Pathfinder, which sail to the Northern Lights terminal in Norway. There, the CO₂ is pumped underground via a 110-kilometer-long pipeline to the Aurora storage site in the North Sea.
INEOS Esbjerg and Project Greensand
In Esbjerg, INEOS Energy is establishing Project Greensand—Europe’s first full-scale CCS value chain. CO₂ from Danish biogas plants is transported to the Port of Esbjerg, where it is temporarily stored in six large tanks. From there, it is loaded onto the Carbon Destroyer 1, which sails to the Nini West platform in the North Sea, where the CO₂ is permanently stored underground.
Future Demand for Maritime Services
These projects demonstrate how maritime transport is becoming a flexible and scalable solution in the CCS value chain. To ensure optimal uptime, there is a need for specialized expertise in maritime services—both mechanical and electrical.
