Aalborg I – Carbon Capture from Aalborg Portland

Challenge
Northern Jutland has the highest CO2 emissions per capita, not least because of the Aalborg Portland cement factory, which emits over 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually – more than 10 times as much as number two on the list of the largest CO2 emitters in Denmark.

In 2020, the North Jutland cement factory entered into an agreement with the government to reduce its CO2 emissions by a minimum of 660,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2030, and the company also committed to further reductions in its contribution to achieving our joint 70 percent target.

It is important to reduce CO2 emissions, but it is at least as important to find a smart way to collect the emissions, store them efficiently and use them for something sensible. Capture of CO2 will be one of the essential elements for the green transition to succeed.

Solution
This project is the first link and a necessary part of the value chain to create Aalborg's vision of a business beacon within CCUS. In the project, 2 different CO2 capture technologies are analyzed and modelled: Cryogenic and Amine-based CO2 capture with the aim of preparing a decision basis for choosing the most cost-effective CO2 capture technology for Aalborg Portland. This result is subsequently used in the design of the lighthouse for CO2 capture.

Effect

  • A decision-making basis for choosing CO2 capture technology based on comparable studies of the most relevant technologies.
  • Design of the CO2 capture lighthouse project including expected operating data and economic efficiency as well as design of infrastructure with a focus on sector coupling around the CO2 capture plant at Portland in Aalborg.
  • An investigation of the possibility of providing system services from a cryogenic CO2 capture plant and the possibility of achieving the sufficient purity of CO2 from this type of plant. This is done through participation in DOE-supported trials with cryogenic CO2 capture at a cement factory in Missouri, USA.
