36 million kroner is to strengthen North Jutland's position within CO2 capture, use, transport and storage

Denmark's Business Promotion Board has awarded the business lighthouse CO2Vision DKK 36 million. DKK over a three-year period. The funds must be used to further develop sustainable technologies and secure the green workforce within CO2 capture, use, transport and storage until 2026.

The money has been allocated to three main areas: Further development of the energy infrastructure of the future, test and demonstration sites as well as skills development, which includes, among other things, the development of course modules and electives for employees in SMEs and students at North Jutland's educational institutions.

Several paths lead towards the common vision

North Jutland's ambition is to be a pioneering region for the capture, use, transport and storage of CO2 – also called CCUS. The consortium behind CO2Vision works actively to make CO2 a resource and increase growth and employment opportunities. Since the start-up in 2022, a strong collaboration has been established between the members of the consortium and a large number of other North Jutland actors, who all contribute to the realization of the vision.

"Through CO2Vision, we have shown that it is possible to gather an entire region around a common agenda. The vision is based in North Jutland, but it is relevant for the whole of Denmark and large parts of the world, so we are extremely satisfied that this work can continue", says Mogens Christen Gade, chairman of the Steering Group behind the CO2Vision consortium.

Test and demonstration sites are further developed

During the first year, the consortium and partners in CO2Vision have gained valuable experience, which will be brought forward in this phase two.

"We have started the first test and demonstration projects. With the new grant, we can continue the collaboration and scale investments and projects within CCUS. The goal is to get even more companies on this joint journey," says Michael Stie Laugesen, project manager at Green Hub Denmark.

An example of a project that is being scaled is at the Port of Aalborg, where a bridge is to be built between two previous CO2Vision demonstration projects.

The new project is called Gate2GreenFuels, and will be given the status of a LivingLab. With a few modifications, the area at the Port of Aalborg can become the leading test and demonstration platform, where existing and new technologies can be validated in a unified Power-to-X system.

Port of Aalborg's ambition is to support industries that want to demonstrate and test new technologies, while at the same time acting as a platform for knowledge sharing and competence building in the future.

Labor and new skills will be needed

Another very central experience that will be passed on is in relation to competence development in the North Jutland SMEs.

"With the new grant, we can continue the initiatives we have started in relation to labor and competence in the past year. In the first phase, we have had to admit that the demand for CCUS-related skills in the market is still relatively small. But it is important that North Jutland SMEs already start by looking at their business opportunities and target their skills in relation to CCUS", explains Luise Linnemann Rasmussen, who is development director at Erhvervshus Nordjylland.

Analyzes indicate that towards 2030, more CCUS facilities will be established and infrastructure expanded, and when this happens, the demand for labor related to CCUS will increase.

There will be a need for a wide range of skills, such as: Engineers, lawyers, drivers, ship fitters, contractors, technical draftsmen, electricians, blacksmiths, structural engineers, plumbers, electricians, machinists, process technicians and process engineers.

Improving the skills of the current workforce and adapting the offers at North Jutland's higher education within the above-mentioned subject areas are therefore central to the next year's work towards the CO2Vision.

At the same time, there will be close sparring with SMEs on how they can expand their business area with a view to becoming subcontractors for the establishment and realization of CO2Vision.
