Marine Renewable Hub – Hirtshals Harbour

Challenge
Hirtshals Havn works to become the region's center for CO2-neutral shipping in 2050, and has therefore established an independent development company – Greenport North. In the first phase of the project, work is being done towards the establishment of production facilities for bunkering 100% green fuels from the port. Through the Nordic Transport Policy Network and the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the Port of Hirtshals can become the decisive link between North Jutland producers of PTX fuels and the maritime consumers.

Solution
A number of initial analyzes indicate that decentralized carbon capture at biogas plants and incineration plants in North Jutland, in combination with the good RE resources and future port facilities in Hirtshals, can produce and deliver competitive PTX fuels to meet the objective of CO2-neutral shipping. The project consists of a number of sub-projects, i.a. investment in a plant for CO2 capture and CO2 and LBG liquefaction at GrønGas Hjørring, a business case for the establishment of a 30-_70 MW methanol plant at Hirtshals Harbor as well as analysis and optimization of CO2 capture and optimal CO2 transport to Hirtshals Harbor.

Effect
The project is thought to continue in a phase ll, where the vision is to establish a methanol plant at the expanded Hirtshals Harbour. The plant will include an electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen and oxygen based on new renewable energy in the area, a plant for receiving and purifying carbon dioxide from point sources in the region, including a network of CO2 pipelines, plants for the synthesis of hydrogen with carbon, including storage and shipping and various auxiliary facilities.
