Vindø – CO2 capture at Vindø Teglværk

Challenge
Vindø Teglværk is currently discharging approx. 6,707 tons of CO2 annually. Vindø Teglværk is owned by Randers Tegl, which has the ambition to be the leading supplier in Scandinavia of sustainable brick building materials. The company has a strategic objective that Randers Tegl must meet the government's 70% CO2 reduction target in 2030, which must be done by reducing energy consumption and developing sustainable solutions for brick production, where the primary climate footprint comes from CO2 emissions from natural gas and clay.

Solution
Vindø Teglværk must invest in a CO2 capture plant. Vindø Teglværk will be optimal to use as a lever for the other brickworks, as Vindø Teglværk is the production unit that is most advanced in implementing sustainable solutions. As a result, Vindø Teglværk has both an organization and a technical set up, which will be advantageous in relation to starting a pilot project with CO2 capture right here. The captured CO2 is liquid and will have a purity that makes it possible to use CO2 in the food industry as well as for PTX applications, plastic processing etc. Furthermore, liquid CO2 can be transported by truck.

Effect
By capturing the CO2 flue gas, this means that you can collect the CO2 emission, which comes from both the natural gas and the clay, where the chemical processes during the lime splitting during firing release approx. 20% of the brickworks' total CO2 emissions.

The project is to be further developed and continued in a phase 2, where a CO2 capture plant is to be installed at Gandrup Teglværk, which emits 16,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
