The road to 100 % green marine fuel

Hirtshals Havn and Greenport North invited dialogue on the way to 100% green maritime fuel in the North Jutland ports

"The goal is that all fuel in the maritime sector must be green. There is a long way to go and not a chrome-plated solution. The first step on the road is to sit down and share knowledge, and we look forward to dialogue and cooperation with you.”

That's what it sounded like when project manager Hanne Skovby welcomed Greenport North to a conference packed with exciting presentations based on Hirtshals Harbor and the local CO2Vision mini-lighthouse Marine Renewable Hub.

No fewer than 80 people attended today's conference, where between the many expert presentations there was also time for networking and dialogue sessions at the tables. During the event, there was good debate and input into value chain development to the benefit of many of the participating parties.

The presenters highlighted a number of themes based on future green fuels for the maritime area, including Power-to-X and CCUS. The Marine Renewable Hub is part of a larger port development, and we were presented with activities based in Hirtshals, i.a. Hirtshals Harbor as a CO2 hub, a business case for CO2 utilization for methanol production, as well as the use of CO2 for liquid biomethane.

As part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the Port of Hirtshals can become the decisive link between North Jutland producers of PTX fuels and the maritime consumers.

The project consists of a number of sub-projects, i.a. investment in a plant for CO2 capture and extraction with a view to the experimental production of liquid biomethane at GrønGas Hjørring, a business case for the establishment of a 70 MW methanol plant at Hirtshals Havn, as well as analysis and optimization of CO2 capture and optimal CO2 transport to Hirtshals Harbour.

A number of initial analyzes indicate that decentralized carbon capture at biogas plants and incineration plants in North Jutland, in combination with the good RE resources and future port facilities in Hirtshals, can create the prerequisites for the production of competitive PTX fuels to meet the objective of CO2-neutral shipping .
